The business delegation led by the Cluster Tecnolóxico Empresarial das Ciencias da Vida (Bioga) from 9 to 13 September, will be made up of the Galician biotech companies AMSbiopharma, AFFINImeter and KeyBiological, as well as the Axencia Galega de Innovación, the Cluster Saúde de Galicia, Galaria, FIDIS and CICA.
Galicia’s biotech ecosystem is taking part in a trade mission to the United States from 9 to 13 September, specifically to the state of North Carolina, one of the most dynamic in the field of life sciences. The Galician biotechnology sector will sign collaboration agreements, open up new business opportunities and present Galicia as a bioregion of international reference.
The Galician companies AMSbiopharma, which forms part of the AMSlab group, AFFINImeter and KeyBiological are taking part in the business trade mission, led by Cluster Tecnolóxico Empresarial das Ciencias da Vida (Bioga). It will also be attended by the Xunta de Galicia, through the Galician Innovation Agency (GAIN), the Galician Health Cluster (CSG), Galaria, Public Company of Health Services, the Health Research Institute Foundation of Santiago de Compostela (FIDIS) and the Interdisciplinary Centre of Chemistry and Biology (CICA).
The mission is part of Bioga’s Internationalisation Plan, aligned with the Biotechnology Consolidation Strategy 2021-2025 promoted by the Galician Innovation Agency, and has the support of the Galician Institute for Economic Promotion (Igape) through the Galicia Exports Intermediate Bodies programmes and the Foexga Plan, which in turn has the support of the Santiago de Compostela Chamber of Commerce.
The president of Bioga, José Vilariño, recalls that this action will serve to “establish relations with biotechnological entities in the United States, sign collaboration agreements and explore and open business opportunities”. In addition, according to José Vilariño, “this initiative will also serve to present and position Galicia as a bioregion of international reference in the field of life sciences”.
During the visits, strategic projects that Bioga leads will be presented, such as IberoBio, which aims to consolidate, position and internationalise the cross-border Iberian sector; and EDIH DATAlife, in which Bioga plays a leading role and which focuses on the digitisation of strategic sectors for Galicia, such as biotech.
The state of North Carolina is among the three best states for doing business in the United States. Its biotechnology sector is among the most consolidated in the world. It has three leading universities and the Research Triangle Park, the largest research park in the United States, specialising, among other areas, in the production of biological molecules, clinical research, pharmaceuticals and agri-food innovation. Companies such as Grifols, Novozymes, Biogen, IQVIA, LabCorp and BASF Plant Sciences are based and operate in North Carolina.
Biotechnology in Galicia represents 2 percent of the autonomous community’s GDP, its turnover totals 1,500 million euros and annual R&D expenditure reaches 127 million euros. It is a strategic sector for the Galician economy and is already a benchmark on the national biotechnology scene. It is one of the most bioentrepreneurial autonomous communities.
